The Essential Paul Bible Study

Wednesdays, 7:00-8:00pm on Zoom
July 1-22, no class on 7/15

Paul is second only to Jesus as the most important person in the development and spread of Christianity. There is a consensus among scholars that some letters of the New Testament attributed to Paul are authentic, meaning they are assumed to be written by Paul. Others are disputed. A third set of these letters are assumed to be inauthentic. They might be important and influential, but generally, scholars believe they are not of Paul’s hand.

In coming weeks, we will explore Paul’s letters and focus on themes that seemed most important to him. What theological themes repeat in Paul’s letters? What seemed to be most important to him to proclaim about Jesus and the life of faith? Contact Eric Dupee, eric@godsacredev.wpengine.com to learn more.

Starting the Conversation

This is a list of resources to help you begin this conversation.

Whether you are an adult, teenager, or child, I hope this compilation allows you to feel supported in engaging in what can be an uncomfortable topic. Now is not the time to bury our heads in the sand and wait for this to pass. Instead, it is a time to embrace our Christian faith and the duties that come with it.

Articles
Scriptures
  • The alien who resides with you in your land, you shall not oppress the alien. The alien who resides with you shall be to you as the citizen among you; you shall love the alien as yourself, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God. Leviticus 19:33-34
  • Take away from me the noise of your songs; I will not listen to the melody of your harps. But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.  Amos 5:23-24
  • He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? Micah 6:8
  • [Jesus] unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
    Luke 4:17b-19
  • But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For he is our peace; in his flesh he has made both groups into one and has broken down the dividing wall, that is, the hostility between us.
    Ephesians 2:13-14

Beacon of Light 2020

Beacon of Light

As many of you know tonight we would be celebrating our youth and lifting up our YG Seniors at the annual Beacon of Light Dinner.  This dinner is not only a reflection on our past year but a moment for our younger fish to glimpse what is in store for them next year and beyond.  Even though we are not physically meeting tonight, Kelly and Erik still wanted this evening to be a mark of hope and celebration for our youth.  Attached below is the link to YG’s Mission Trip Video from our Mission to Sacramento this past February.  In the video you will witness the work our Fish were able to accomplish and how our group came together serving the communities of North Sacramento and Rancho Cordova.  We hope that this is a reminder that all of our youth continue to be beacons of light in our world and that their love is a driver for change.  Despite us not being physically together for this event we are still together in spirit.

I hope you all enjoy!

Share in Sabbath Dinners at Home

We are sharing this guide to a Sunday Sabbath Dinner to enjoy with your family:

Make Dinner Together, Set Table, & Listen to a Christian Playlist

Here is a great place to find contemporary Christian Music!

Sit Down for Dinner

Once everyone is seated, and before anyone has eaten, light a candle for everyone around the table as each participant says something they are thankful to God for over the past week.
“I am thankful to God for…”

Once all candles are lit, take hands and offer a prayer for the meal including the thanksgivings that have been offered.

Enjoy the meal together.

As the meal winds down, before dessert, either read or re-tell the Bible story for the day. Ask as many questions from the study guide as seems manageable for the evening.

Before anyone leaves the table, have each participant say again what they are thankful to God for and have them blow out their candle.

Take hands and recite the Lord’s Prayer together.
