Read: Matthew 13:31–32, 44–50

Jesus put before them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that someone took and sowed in his field.”  Matthew 13:31

Jesus did not say what the kingdom of heaven is, he merely explained what the kingdom of heaven is like. The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed. The kingdom of God is like yeast. The kingdom of heaven is like hidden treasure and a pearl of great price and a net thrown into the sea. If Jesus didn’t know exactly what the kingdom of heaven is, then it might be fair to say that none of us do either. But Jesus knew what it was like. It is more expansive than we can imagine, it is worth any price we must pay, and it is open to all who pursue it.

What do you imagine the kingdom of heaven to be?

Lord, I don’t what heaven is exactly. I suspect it is eternal and loving and beautiful like You. Help me to live my life in ways that allow me to one day see that which I can now only imagine. In Your name, I pray. AMEN.
