Read: Matthew 15:10–20
It is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but it is what comes out of the mouth that defiles. Matthew 15:11
To be defiled is to be made dirty in our eyes and in the eyes of God. We tend to think that it is external influences that compromise our cleanliness, like the mud puddles we used to splash in as children. But it is not our outside that God is most interested in. God wants us clean on the inside. The gossip, slander, and foul language that comes out of our mouths are signals of a deadly heart condition within us. God is much less interested in the cholesterol, fat, and carbohydrates we ingest, and much more interested in cleaning up the language, criticism, and cynicism that proceed from our hearts. A clean mouth can be the best way to a healthy heart.
Are you careless or hurtful with your words?
Lord, I swear, I gossip, and I do not realize how hurtful my words can be to others. I am completely oblivious to how my words reflect on my own spiritual health. I have a heart condition, Lord. I need Your guidance, presence, and intercession if I am to receive a clean bill of health. Help me, for I seem unable to help myself. In Your name, I pray. AMEN.
