Read: Romans 8:1–11
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. Romans 8:1–2
There are a lot of claims about Jesus. There are countless popular slogans bandied about that pertain to him. Some beliefs about Jesus are so simplistic that the entire line of thinking can be captured on a bumper sticker. Debates rage about salvation, judgment, and sin and how Jesus is involved in it all. However, if there is one profound claim that seems perhaps most important, it is that in Jesus we find freedom. Jesus calls us into a new life that is free from past mistakes, painful histories, and poor choices. Jesus frees us from deathly patterns of thinking, acting, and believing so that we can fully embrace and enjoy the life we have been given. Jesus is not in the condemnation business, he is in the liberating business. Jesus is less interested in laws than he is in life!
Are you free?
Lord, when I think of all I have been told about You over the years—all that I have been encouraged to believe and struggled to believe—I hope and pray that my freedom can be found in You. There are so many times when I feel bound—bound by my past, bound by my present commitments, and bound by a future that seems so uncertain. This is quite alarming to me. I long for a life that is free and joyous and meaningful. Please break into my life and break the bonds that tie me down in enslaving ways. In Jesus’ name, I pray. AMEN.
