For this slight momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternal weight of glory beyond measure. 2 Corinthians 4:17

Life is hard. Love can lead to heartbreak. Failures often seem to mount up with greater frequency than successes. There is joy and beauty in life to be sure, but life begins with an infant’s uncomfortable scream and can end with the whimper that may accompany a person’s final breath. As Paul said in his first letter to the Christians in Corinth, “If for this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied.” Life in this world can seem cruel and unkind and unfortunate. But we must always view this life through the promise of an eternal life that exists beyond all we can see. Our life in this world is but an instant. So, live it well, love others, and take your lumps along the way, trusting that a glory awaits us that will quiet every cry, wipe away every tear, and convert all sorrows into joy.

What affliction do you need to remind yourself is only temporary?

Lord, help me to cleave to the reality that life in this world is preciously short, while eternity with You lasts forever. Help me to live this life well—even when the living is not easy—knowing that with You there will be wonderful and renewing eternal rest. In Your name, I pray. AMEN.
