Read: Matthew 5:33–37
“You shall not swear falsely, but carry out the vows you have made. . . . Let your word be ‘Yes, Yes’ or ‘No, No’; anything more than this comes from the evil one.” Matthew 5:33 & 37
As people of faith, we are cautioned in the scripture to be careful about what we promise. Jesus said we should respond to requests made of us by saying “yes” or “no;” any further commitment can be hazardous. Speak plainly and clearly and don’t make promises you can’t keep. Do not give your word unless you are absolutely sure you can make good on it. If you do make vows and commitments, carry them out to their completion. We have all broken promises at times and failed to follow through on commitments we have made. Thankfully, scripture asserts that God forgives us for those shortcomings. However, the goal is still before us—to be people of our word.
Do you promise more than you can deliver and make commitments you can’t keep?
Lord, I too often make casual promises and give my word without fully counting the costs. Help me to be more careful when I give my word, and give me resolve to make good on the commitments and vows I make. In Jesus’ name, I pray. AMEN.
